Mifeprex, a tablet, is used to end an early pregnancy as an alternative to surgical abortion. It is only available to patients who are no more than 9 weeks pregnant. This procedure takes 2 days to complete. Mifeprex is administered orally on the first day by the physician and is used to stop the growth of the pregnancy. Approximately 6 to 72 hours after taking Mifeprex, another medication called Misoprostol is inserted into the vagina against the cervix encouraging the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.
Some women say that with this procedure they experience symptoms of a heavy period while other women describe the bleeding and cramping as much more intense. Please keep in mind that everyone responds differently.
